Overcoming the Human Technology Bottleneck

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Laptop Thoughts Talk" @ 09:30 AM

http://blog.laptopmag.com/only-dual...uman-bottleneck

"In an era where every mainstream notebook has at least two CPU cores and even phones will soon have four, human beings are becoming the real bottleneck in every application. Each time you switch between tasks because you need to copy and paste that URL from the browser into your Facebook update in another tab or browser window, your system waits on you. Whether you're using a notebook, tablet, or phone, more megahertz won't solve this problem. Dual screens such as those on the Kyocera Echo phone and Acer Iconia 6120 tablet will."

With dual cores, quad cores, ad infinitum, users are overwhelmed with popups, windows, background apps, chats, video sessions, file transfers and (fill-in-the-blank). It's still a case of hurry-up and wait, but today it's no longer the computer that is the bottleneck, it's us. The author opines that adding a second screen is one way to overcome bottlenecks. While this would provide some relief, I personally think that today's technology is limited more by our archaic I/O devices, specifically the keyboard and mouse, that haven't really changed much from the first computers with attached keyboards. How do we overcome this bottleneck? Voice recognition? Imagine an office with a bunch of cubicles where everyone is chattering (and yelling, no doubt) at their computer. Can you say cacophony? Even after decades of research and development, voice recognition and control is rudimentary at best, at least in my world. Anybody have any ideas? A world of riches probably awaits anyone who can solve this problem.

A Dual (15-Inch) Screen Notebook from Acer in 2011?

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Acer Laptops & Netbooks" @ 11:00 PM

"In what appears to be the latest craze, next to tablets of course, it looks like Acer is working on a dual screen notebook, similar to the Toshiba Libretto W100. Similar but different that is. The leaked dual screen notebook from Acer adds larger screens and a much more powerful processor - as well as a bit of heft."

Definitely an unconfirmed rumour (with a dodgy picture) at this point, Acer's dual-screen notebook may have two 15-inch screens, may be powered by an Intel Core i5 processor, and may appear late in 2011. I'd imagine that this prototype, if it really exists, will need some major work to see the light of day. Battery life? 30 minutes? Fun to speculate though!

Kno Dual-Screen Tablet Receives Additional Funding

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Other Slates & Tablets" @ 12:00 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/10/...creened-tablet/

"If you need a tablet with presence you need the Kno. Its dual capacitive 14-inch IPS displays, each clocking in at 1,440 x 990, make this thing closer to a Surface than a Courier and surely present some unique challenges when it comes to pricing. Kno, the company, plans to sell it by the end of the year for an MSRP of under $1,000, and a new $46 million injection in financing should go a long way toward making that happen."

Picture two thin 14-inch laptop screens, joined together, and lose the keyboard(s), and you get an idea of the size of the initial Kno prototypes. Beautiful in concept, the demos are really impressive, but the bottom line: this tablet, targeted at college students, is huge. Hopefully Kno will be able to forge partnerships with textbook publishers to enable this to be a a viable and cost-effective platform for students. While the Know is large, it is still dwarfed by (and light, compared to) a typical student's backpack, loaded-down with $300 textbooks. Students - would a tablet computer this large interest you? What do you currently lug around?
