Barnes & Noble Open to Repartitioning Nook

Posted by Jon Westfall in "Android Slates/Tablets & Accessories" @ 09:00 AM

"One of the big differences between the Barnes & Noble NOOK Tablet and the Amazon Kindle Fire is that the NOOK Tablet offers twice as much storage space. While Amazon's tablet has just 8GB, the NOOK Tablet is now available with either 8GB or 16GB."

So you say you want to use more space on that shiny nook you bought for your own programs? Well B&N seems open to that. Not bad for all of the Nook users out there who are itching to fill up their tablets with more apps!

Video of Honeycomb Running on the Nook Color

Posted by Craig Horlacher in "Android News" @ 08:00 AM

A friend of mine tried the SD preview install of Honeycomb on his Nook Color and posted a video of the results. Not bad for a single core ebook reader considering there were rumors that Honeycomb would require a dual-core CPU. The build shown doesn't have sound working but that has already been fixed along with a storage problem. Will you consider buying a Nook Color to use as a Honeycomb tablet? The cost is only $250 + an 8GB MicroSDHC card.

Can the Nook Color Compete?

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Laptop Thoughts News" @ 02:00 PM

"The device sold well and launched B&N into the emedia segment. But, using the e-ink display had its drawbacks. Page load times are noticeably slow, magazines and newspapers looked disappointing at best, and there was still a vast amount of information and content to be consumed that an e-ink display simply cannot bring to the table Fast forward to today and they decided to give users another choice in the market, the Nook Color ($250)."

The world is more than Kindles, iPads and cheap Android tablets. Barnes & Noble has their own line of eReaders with their most recent model being the Nook Color. It kind of straddles the line between an eReader and a tablet being an Android based device and offering a colour screen. Does aspiring to be more make it lose its focus? I do think that one of the most notable features of the Nook (and a select few other eReaders) is the ability to "loan" books from your local library.

Yes, that library. While the Internet now gets piped into almost every household and streets everywhere, the Library is still a great fountain of knowledge and has managed to take advantage of some of what the Internet has to offer. The ability to loan out books means that you suddenly have access to a huge wealth of information that does not exist (at least not yet) on the Internet. Couple that with buying books, and Android's web browser, the Nook Color certainly is compelling as an information device.

Angry Birds and the Root of All Nooks

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Android News" @ 03:00 PM

"In his review of Barnes & Noble’s e-reader Nook Color, Andrew mentioned that eventual root access perhaps could provide the somewhat limited tablet with extra functionality. Thanks to the industrious and experimental gadget lovers at the xda-developers, the Nook Color has now indeed been rooted, but the process is still pretty complicated."

Hacking hardware seems to be a tradition of popular, or even semi-popular electronics. From the Linksys WRT54G series to various HTC phones, hackers have been busy stretching the boundaries of what these electronics are capable of. The Nook Color is no exception. Why root an eBook reader? Well, since the Nook has Android underpinnings, rooting means that you can install your own apps. This is a Good Thing, since the Nook does not give access to the Market. It also makes the Nook a very tempting colour Android tablet. I hope Barnes and Noble priced their tablet so they do not sell it at a loss, as I suspect that once the rooting process is streamlined, quite a few sales of the Nooks will be for non-eBook purposes.

NOOKcolor Packs Android Goodness, Odd Capitalization

Posted by Jon Westfall in "Android Slates/Tablets & Accessories" @ 11:00 AM

"NOOKcolor, built on Android, is a full-color touch device dedicated to reading that opens up a whole new world of digital reading materials. NOOKcolor provides access to the largest ebookstore with an unprecedented selection of over two million digital titles-all just a single search away. Plus, digital content - from bestsellers to favorite magazines in full color, and interactive children's picture books to enhanced cookbooks - has never looked better than on NOOKcolor's stunning 7-inch VividView Color Touchscreen."

Well well well... here we have a color eReader, although obviously not using eInk. The NOOKcolor (For some reason I think the C should be capitalized, but hey, what do I know). You can pre-order it for $249 now, and it should be shipping sometime around November 17, although given B&N's track record, don't hold your breath. Not a bad looking product though, and I do know a few NOOK lovers, so perhaps this will make the experience even better for the B&N crowd!
