The Panasonic Toughpad A1 Coming in Spring 2012

"The Kindle Fire can bring the heat. But the Toughpad can handle flamethrowers. Panasonic is extending its line of weather-resistant, hard-shelled mobile devices to include Android tablets. Announced today, the Toughpad A1 will sport a 10.1-inch XGA capacative screen and a 1.2-GHz Marvell dual-core processor running Android 2.3 Honeycomb, and will be released in Spring 2012."

I've always been intrigued by Panasonic's series of hardened devices, and the Toughpad A1 is no exception. MIL-STD-810G compliance means that this tablet will be able to withstand drops, water, dust, and extreme temperatures. While very rugged, these devices seem to be always somewhat behind the technology curve, maybe due to the intensive and time-consuming hardening requirements.

The A1 tablet will run Android Honeycomb (not Ice Cream Sandwich), but will have a bundle of high-end features, like a daylight-viewable anti-glare, anti-reflective screen, battery life rated at 10-hours, and additional layers of security. Definitely a niche product, the Toughpad A1 will weigh 2.3-pounds and will be .67-inches thick, twice as heavy and twice as thick as the iPad 2. Not cheap at $1299, but if you need ruggedness, security and durability, this is your tablet.

CES 2011: Panasonic Viera Android Tablets

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Other Slates & Tablets" @ 09:00 AM

It seems like you couldn't go ten feet at CES without running into someone showing off an Android-based tablet - oh Microsoft, how could you not see this coming - but sometimes the popped up in surprising places. One such place was the Panasonic booth. Amidst giant 3D TVs, HD video cameras, and technology galore, were a series of three tablets: 10 inch, 7 inch, and 4 inch. Each of these tablets were prototypes; Panasonic isn't shipping these yet. They link up to Panasonic's on-board Viera software to do neat things like steam any video from the tablet to the TV. This type of integration is slick - check out out the video.

Lightweight Notebook Built Panasonic Tough

Posted by Hooch Tan in "Laptop Thoughts News" @ 10:00 AM

"Panasonic's Toughbook line hasn't only been impressing in extreme durability lately, but also in extreme weight-loss. Joining the 3.2-pound Tougbook C1, is the newest 12.1-inch Toughbook S9, which weighs just three pounds. And yes, Panny's claiming it's the lightest 12-incher with an optical drive, and our quick research seems to prove that claim right."

There was a time when the Panasonic Toughbooks were hefty behemoths that had considerable extra weight to make them last the abuse Toughbooks are famous to handling. The new Toughbooks do not look too different from more traditional laptops, but the specifications and price tell a different story. For those of you who want a notebook that can weather storms on a boat, or stand ready for you at a construction site, you might not have any other choice. To be honest though, I would likely end up buying two or three laptops and just keep the others as spares instead of going with one like this. What about you?
